Time matters more than the season
I saw the first oval room empty on a Saturday in August at 9:05 a.m. and full on a Wednesday in January at 3 p.m. The season plays a role, but the time decides. The timed ticket is for that, and nothing else; it's explained on should you book. Enter at 9 a.m., do the ovals, go down. At 10 a.m., the first group arrives and the central bench is no longer free.
Friday evening
During temporary exhibition periods, the museum remains open until 9 p.m. on Friday, with reduced rates from 6 p.m. The ceiling light dims during the visit, the rooms empty. Last entry at 8:15 p.m. Check if an exhibition is currently on at opening hours.
The seasons
November to February, outside school holidays, is the quietest period, and the low winter light suits the evening panels. July-August is the busiest period with the first Sunday of the month. In spring, the Tuileries garden is at its best and compensates for the queue.
My slot, if I had to keep just one: a Thursday in January, 9 a.m. Twenty minutes alone in the first room, then the basement with no one in front of the Soutines. How to get there on time is on getting there by metro.
